Evaluation -

Our objectives was to produce a video to advertise a product of our choice between a table and some draws. We decided to chose the draws because they looked the most elegant and the style of the draws had different angles with unique shapes, which made the design interesting and appealing, we thought it would be positive if we decided of filming the product from different angles to show the audience the different shapes.

As a group we achieved what we set out to do by planning in advance for all aspects of what our video was going to be about.  To make sure that we knew what we was going to film we planned a story board to know the different range of shots that we wanted and who was going to be in each scene . Also we filled out location reeces to compare different locations to see which one was the most suitable e.g. space, lighting etc. Once we had finalised what was our favourite location by comparing the qualities on the rooms we then used booking forms to make sure that we booked in advanced for equipment and to make sure that our location was free. To make sure that we planned on what we was going to do next and during what tasked needed to be followed up, everybody in our group filled out production diaries, this made it easier for us to know the responsibilities , outcomes , task & what needed to be followed up. To make sure that we was prepared and to know exactly what we was going to film we wrote a filming schedule which included the people who are going to be involved, equipment, props, filming and editing. This also made us organised and to make sure we had everything ready for the day that we booked to film and edit. We was also created contingency plans which was if things went wrong/ incase things didn't go to plan what could be our plan b . Lastly as part of palnning we created risk assessments to become aware of what could happen and how to prevent them if they did happen to occure.

During this process I have shown a range of aspects of my ability to work in a team , and independently throughout this unit . I have met deadlines and organised my work in a clear way into sections that will make it easer for others to view my blog. I have used a range of graphics such as spider diagrams, screen shots, photographs and written text , which shows a variety of media skills. The other skills that i have developed during this process is that i have developed my knowledge and understanding of how a advert works and the  process of making an advert. I have also learnt that the rules and regualtions that you have to follow when making and advert by looking at the rules and regualtions followed by the ASA.

As a team I think we worked well , however at times we could have been more organised at meeting and recording. To overcome this we could have filmed during lunch or after school times. Developing as a team we decided to allocate the different job roles and to each have a responsibility to work efficiently and to make the task more easier . However due to the sickness of some of my group members we took over some of the roles such Rianna and I took turns filming and some parts of editing. To make sure people practiced the skills that needed to be evidanced, production diaries were completed regulary to keep track of work and showed who wasn't there during the task completed.

I found the editing process quite simple, furthermore I didn't have many experiences using the software iMovie as I only have used it ones/twice before, however we filmed the same scene's using a range of different shots, which enabled us to edit trying a range of shots to see which suited best. Also the editing process worked well as some of our other group members have used IMovie before, so they had some basic skills & knowledge.

I think that our finished product worked well as we used a range of different shots which made the final result of our video effective such as the close-up of the price, meduim shot of the draws etc. and we made it clear to the consumers what are product was. To improve our product we could create a sale to draw the customers attention e.g. 50% off when you buy 'Blockmiester draws' or create a webpage for the draws with information etc, which will give the commercial a more realistic effect.

I think that the 'BlockMiester draws' are original as they are appealing and that they were designed for us by 'Steve Mclean'. The design of the product is elegant with a silver shinny handle, which is appealing to our primary target audience (woman).

The products overall quality material could be easy to damage if handled irresponsibly. To make sure that we handle the product well and responsibly we use a sack truck to move the product, to make sure it wasn't damaged or broken to our filming location.

We made two commercials, one TV commercial which is 0.24 secs and a full commercial which is 0.55 secs long. The reason for this was to create greater awareness, with the shorter advert this would be a Tv advert and the longer advert being an original copy for an online advert. The shorter advert is much more faster pace with rapid cheesy music to go with it where as the longer version is more paced out with clear indication of scripting.

To manage our time we planned on what we was going to do next by completing a production diary on what needed to be followed up and we booked in a time/day when we was going to film and edit.

Agendas

To manage our time we made agendas which included the goals that we wanted to achieve which we
came up with suggestions for our advert for the product that we chose which was the draws, by the following lesson we wanted to have come up with a final idea and to start creating storyboards to be able to see it visually. Our achievements during this task was that we came up with ideas for our advert, for inspiration we looked at a few adverts on YouTube, to get ideas, we all created our own storyboards within the group, then we all added a section from each of us and added them as one. Which helped make the production successful as we had an idea of what we wanted the advert to look like.

Meetings

By arranging meetings within the group this helped us to develop our ideas and organised our time wisely by making sure we followed the deadlines. In one of our meetings we discussed the theme that we wanted our advert to follow, which resulted that we wanted it to be rememberable so we came up with a cheesy American theme and then discussed who would best play this role as our actors. The reponsibilties that was allocated for finding the possible actors and the contingency plan of actors was Rianna and Elliot, we then had a following meeting for the possible actors and by looking at storyboards this further helped us to know what our advert was going to look like.

Production diaries

To help us know what needed to be followed up we completed production diaries, this included the task, the outline of the task, responsibilities and what needed to be followed up. This also saved us time, by completing production diaries this helped us manage our time well.

By creating primary research of a questionnaire for our final products we was able to receive feedback from other members of our class. They thought that the selling point of our adverts was the performance of the acting becauase it gave the advert a humorous feel . They also thought that our final product had a good range of shots sizes and it was memorable, however they thought that it wasn't as realistic as it could of been because the drawers were 'magic'. This could affect the final target audience as 'magic' appeals to kids as a demographic and not as a age range between 20-30 year olds which is our initial primary target audience. However in our advert we wanted it to go with our slogan 'make magic happen when buying blockmiester draws' emplying that if you buy this product it will be a positive thing.

The new skills that I have learnt during this project is that I have improved my camera skills by filming and using a range of different angles and shot sizes . I have also learnt how to use more of the tools on IMovie such as transition by emergaing different clips together which resulted in the final video to have a variety of shots. Clipping and cutting . I used the cutting tool to enable me to keep an approiate  rhythm within the advert to make it look more professional without the clip jumping from scene to scene. The clipping tool allows you to shorten clips to keep the rhythm and the pace of the footage,
and this improved my editorial skills. I learnt how to do this with other members of my team who have more expierence using the software. By working in a team i have discovered my strength and weaknesses such as i never used IMovie before, and in the task I turn it  into a strength.

The problems that we had during the making of the product was that two of our group members wern't there . To overcome this problem me and another one of my team members had to fill in for the rest of our group that was missing. Also we had to move the equipment needed to the location, which was difficult for us as the product was heavy and we had to get a some equipment to help move the equipment efficiently.

I think that I was successful at meeting deadlines because I completed the work on time and posted on my blog. However as a group there were some issues with finishing deadlines such as other members of our group had delays with production diaries which we made them our priority to complete and to finish the scripts before we moved on to anything else. To make sure that I have met deadlines more effectively i could have recorded in a diary of the work that needed to be completed and what needed to be followed up.

I think that i was well organised with planning and preparation of the final video due to the planning of the storyboards and identifying the roles and responsibilities. Also I think that i was well organised with the location of filming by completing location recess and taking photographs of the location to show evidence.

To show evidence when filming that i was well organised i filled out a booking sheet to slot in a time with my group on what days we was going to film & edit. Also to show that we was well organised there was a time/date schedule that we stuck by to make sure that we didn't go over and waste time and to make sure that our video would be completed by 25th-30th may.

In our filming we didn't recognise any missing items, we had everything that we needed on the filming day as we made a planning schedule of the things that we needed to bring when filming our product  we brought items such as the draws, the actors, our storyboards etc. However the items that we didn't have access to was a clapper board. As a alternative we used word of mouth and actors to inform the actors of cutting scenes and when we was filming again. This method could have been more effective with a clapper board so the actors could easily recognise how many takes and when each scene is starting.

If i was going to make my product again I would make the video less cheesy because when watching the video back again I don't feel that it would reach our primary target audience, which is woman aged between 20-30 years .

I think that our product would satisfy our consumer’s needs by the storage space that you can fit in the draw, it can hold a lot and can storage items such as magazines and newspapers. Also I think that the product looks appealing which would fit best in peoples homes. The price of our product was reasonably cheap which will also attract our target audience. The original clients proposal was to inform people about the product and to make people aware of the design. To further develop the clients proposal i feel that we didn't undertake any primary research to our targeted demographic audience, furthermore i feel that as a group to find out if our intentital target audience would be interested in our product we could have carried out more research to identify if our final product would be successful.

I think our product isn't that original because other adverts have been shot handheld and at a low budget such as the link below. However in comparison to 'dc jester cheap furniture' our video is less annoying due to his tone of voice. This video is negative and talking about cheap furniture which may suggest its not that good quality, this wouldn't attract a wide demographic, however may get stuck in peoples head/ rememberable due to his annoying, loud tone of voice .This advert uses CGI, which gets the viewers attention such as 'everything must go'. This advert also uses promotional stratagy sales to attract the audience such as '80% off' . In comparison to our advert we both use white walls to make the background and our location look bigger and spacious , it also creates a brighter lighting for our advert which gives it a more pleasant and a cleanliness feel . I also think that  our advert is comicaly driven with the cheesy Amarican theme and this has helped get stuck in peoples heads.

We used production diaries to help our production techniques, furthermore this planned us for filming and editing and we knew what days we had to film also by a booking form, and to also secure the equipment such as a camera for a particluar date. We have used production techniques before such as how to operate a camera and our knowledge of a range of different shot sizes and camera angles and some of our team members have used iMovie before which enabled them to share their skills within the team.
Rianna and I directed our actors in our advert, by using our storyboard/ script this was effective as we knew what we was wanted to do / follow. We directed our actors by telling them the lines they should say, and the positioning of the actors.

Referring to the ASA regulations, we didn't hurt anybody or offend any of our consumers, or mislead them into a unreliable product. However it could be argued that we used the word 'theses draws are magic. In reflection the draws isn't magic however we was emplying that if you buy this product you can make magic happen which is our slogan / which would be a positive thing if you buy the draws. By researching in media resources, referring to Ofcom and Derren Brown illusions he received negative feedback such as 'It will consider whether the scene "condones or glamorises violent, dangerous or seriously anti-social behaviour and is likely to encourage others to copy such behaviour" or breaches "generally accepted standards" in broadcasting'. Referring back to my product there is nothing in our advert that would consider dangerous, violent nature that would reflect in 'magic' in my advert. Also referring to Ofcom there was controversy with Derren Brown's illusion as there was concern of serious anti social behaviour which may have been concisered of breaking the broadcasting regulations. In our advert we don't use any material that would cross this.

Comparison with proessional products :

How does our product compare to professional products?

This advert for 'King Furniture' is short but has some information that grabs your attention and compares it to other furniture . I think that this advert will be shown on tv becuase of the duration of this advert , from this commercial the primary target audience seems to be aimed at middle class / to upper class aged 30+ . The reason being why i think this is aimed at this demographic is because of the language used . The selling points of this furniture is the 'comfort' and the style. In this clip it mentions about you can change the style .
This video compares to our product 'Blockmiester draws' because the both of the adverts has a unique selling point , in this clip above is selling the comfort , in our advert the unique selling point is that it is magic draws and the appearance of the draws. The difference between our group advert and this one is that , 'king furniture' is more formal and professional to its demographic . In comparison to our video we wanted to make it comical and appealing to our primary target audience , which shows that our advert is opposite. Towards the end of this advert the company has up to 50% of selected items which is another selling point for the company and persuades people to buy the product. Also at the end of their advert there is a website which people can go to and get more information http://www.kingfurniture.com.au/ using this knowledge , this is something as a group that we could have improved on by giving more information at the end of our advert to make it look more professional. However in there commercial they didn't mention the price this could be because of the sale and also because they are selling more than one product / they are selling a variety of furniture.
Also the name 'King Furniture' identifies the class / status and king symbolises royalty and relaxation which is what there unique / selling points they was marketing.

The same qualities between 'king Furniture' and 'Blockmiester draws'

  • we have each identified a unique selling point
The comparison between them / the differences
  • 'King Furniture' advert has a website mentioned and another way for people to buy the product / a 50% sale
  • King Furniture is short but gets message across quickly
  • In our advert we use a more variety of different shots , in there advert they only use 2/ 3 different shots e.g. wide shot , close up , medium close-up.

How could our advert improved by watching this ?

  • By adding a web address ( to create a webpage or a pretend one to make it look more professional as our target audience use the internet a lot )
  • By create a sale / lowering the price of the product as people may be put off with the price of our product £99.99 .
In conclusion i feel that there is things that we could improve to make our advert more successful by showing the product to our intentional demographic audience, as we showed the advert to teenagers to get audience feedback. Overall I feel that we worked well as a group, and did well with the budget and the equipment that was provided.

I have shown my advert to my peers and my teachers, which i received feedback on how to improve the grading to a higher standard. In reflection I will re-film my advert.
